Beginner's Guide
Learn Balatro from scratch. Core mechanics, Joker basics, hand types, and strategies for your first win.
Welcome to Balatro
Balatro is a roguelike poker game where you play poker hands to earn chips and progress through ante rounds. The twist is the Joker system - special cards that modify your scoring in unique ways. Each run is different, and mastering Joker synergies is key to winning.
This beginner's guide covers everything you need to know for your first win. We'll explain core mechanics, Joker selection, hand types, and basic strategies.
Core Mechanics Explained
How Scoring Works
Every poker hand you play scores Chips × Mult:
- Chips: Sum of card values (2-10 = face value, J/Q/K = 10, A = 11) + hand base chips
- Mult: Hand base Mult + Joker bonuses + card bonuses
- Example: Pair of 8s = (8+8+10) Chips × (2 Mult) = 26 × 2 = 52 base score
Jokers add extra Chips and Mult, creating exponential scoring potential. More Jokers = higher scores.
Ante Rounds
Each ante consists of 3 blinds you must beat:
- Small Blind: Easiest, builds up score requirement
- Big Blind: Medium difficulty, higher score requirement
- Boss Blind: Hardest, has special rules (see Boss Blind section)
You have limited hands (usually 3) to beat each blind. If you don't score enough, you lose a life. 3 lives = run ends.
The Shop
After beating each ante, you visit the shop to buy:
- Jokers: $4-8, modify scoring (most important)
- Tarot Cards: $3-4, modify your deck
- Planet Cards: $3, level up poker hands
- Vouchers: $10, permanent shop upgrades
- Spectral Packs: $4, rare powerful cards
You start with 5 Joker slots. Buy Jokers that synergize with your strategy.
Jokers - The Heart of Balatro
Jokers are permanent cards that modify scoring. They're the most important aspect of the game:
- Additive Mult: "+X Mult" (Joker, Fortune Teller, Abstract)
- Multiplicative Mult: "×X Mult" (Baron, Photograph, Blueprint)
- Chips: "+X Chips" (Bonus Card, Stone Card, Banner)
- Scaling: Jokers that grow over time (Joker, Constellation, Wee)
- Conditional: Require specific conditions (Half, Lusty, Photograph)
Build Jokers that work together. A Joker that gives +4 Mult plus a Joker that gives ×2 Mult = ×2 of more Mult.
Poker Hand Types
Balatro uses standard poker hands with scoring values. Learn each hand type:
| Hand | Requirements | Base Chips | Base Mult |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Card | Any single card | 5 | 1 |
| Pair | 2 cards same rank | 10 | 2 |
| Two Pair | 2 pairs of same rank | 20 | 2 |
| Three of a Kind | 3 cards same rank | 30 | 3 |
| Straight | 5 sequential cards | 30 | 4 |
| Flush | 5 cards same suit | 35 | 4 |
| Full House | 3 of one rank + 2 of another | 40 | 4 |
| Four of a Kind | 4 cards same rank | 60 | 7 |
| Straight Flush | 5 sequential same suit | 100 | 8 |
| Royal Flush | 10-J-Q-K-A same suit | 100 | 8 |
Beginner Tip: Focus on ONE hand type. Pair and Flush are easiest for beginners. Three of a Kind is good for intermediate players. Choose your specialization early and stick with it.
Best Jokers for Beginners
Start with these easy-to-understand, effective Jokers:
Joker ($4)
+4 Mult, gains +2 Mult when any Joker is sold
Best beginner Joker. Starts with +4 Mult and scales passively. Every time you sell a Joker, this gets stronger. By mid-game, easily +15+ Mult.
Half Joker ($5)
+20 Mult if hand has 3 or fewer cards
Perfect for Pair builds. Pair = 2 cards, High Card = 1 card, Three of a Kind = 3 cards. Easy +20 Mult bonus.
Greedy Joker ($5)
+3 Mult for each $5 you have
Rewards saving money. With $25 banked, gives +15 Mult. Also encourages good economy habits.
Photograph ($5)
First face card played gives ×2 Mult
Multiplicative bonus! Play a Jack, Queen, or King first in your scoring hand. ×2 Mult is powerful. Works with any build.
Gros Michel ($5)
+25 Mult, 1 in 6 chance to self-destruct
Massive early Mult bonus. Risk of destruction but usually lasts 5+ rounds. If destroyed, spawns Cavendish (better version) in shop.
Abstract Joker ($4)
+3 Mult per Joker owned
Scales with Joker collection. 4 Jokers = +12 Mult. Simple and effective. Works with any build.
Avoid These Early: Blueprint ($8) - complex positioning. Baron ($8) - needs Kings. Spectral cards - risky. Focus on simple +Mult Jokers first.
First Win Strategy
Follow this step-by-step strategy for your first win:
Choose Red Deck
Red Deck has no special rules. Most flexible for learning. Use Red Deck until you understand the game.
Pick Pair Build
Pair is easiest hand type. You'll find pairs almost every hand. Commit to Pair from Ante 1.
Buy Joker First
Ante 1 shop: Buy "Joker" (+4 Mult) if available. If not, buy any +Mult Joker. Don't spend all money - keep $5.
Add Half Joker
Ante 2-3 shop: Buy "Half Joker" (+20 Mult for ≤3 cards). This works perfectly with Pair (2 cards).
Level Pair with Venus
Buy Venus Planet Card when available. Level Pair to increase Chips and Mult. Aim for Level 3-4 by Ante 5.
Keep $25 for Interest
Save money! $25 gives $5 interest per ante. Don't spend below $5. Economy compounds across run.
Add Photograph or Third Joker
Ante 4-5: Buy Photograph (×2 Mult) or another +Mult Joker. Stack Mult bonuses. More Jokers = more scoring.
Use Tarot Cards
Buy Tarot Cards when available. Use "Death" to create duplicate ranks for easier pairs. Use "The Sun/Moon/Star/World" for suit builds if switching to Flush.
Prepare for Boss
Ante 7-8: Save your best hands for boss blinds. Don't waste scoring on small blinds if you can beat them with weak hands.
Beat Ante 8 Boss
Win! Ante 8 boss is the final challenge. With 3-4 Jokers and Level 4-5 Pair, you should win. Congratulations!
Common Beginner Mistakes
Avoid these mistakes that new players often make:
❌ Playing Every Hand Type
Problem: Trying to play Straight, Flush, Pair, everything.
Solution: Specialize in ONE hand type. Focus Planet Cards and Jokers on that hand.
❌ Spending All Money
Problem: Buying everything in shop, no money left.
Solution: Keep $25 for interest. Only buy Jokers that fit your build. Interest = free money.
❌ Ignoring Joker Synergies
Problem: Buying random Jokers without thinking.
Solution: Plan Jokers that work together. Half + Pair. Photograph + face cards. Build synergies.
❌ Not Leveling Hands
Problem: Never buying Planet Cards, hands stay Level 1.
Solution: Buy Planet Cards for your chosen hand. Level 5 Pair > Level 1 Straight Flush.
❌ Wasting Scoring Hands
Problem: Playing best hand on Small Blind when Big Blind needs it.
Solution: Save scoring hands for harder blinds. Beat Small Blind with minimum effort.
❌ Using Spectral Cards Carelessly
Problem: Using Ankh, Hex without understanding consequences.
Solution: Spectral cards can destroy Jokers. Use only when desperate or with backup plan.
Boss Blind Introduction
Each ante ends with a Boss Blind that has special rules. Learn these common bosses:
The Hook
Discards 2 random cards each hand. Counter: Play hands with extra cards, don't rely on specific card combos.
The Wall
Requires 2x score. Counter: Use your best Joker combination, leveled hands, save scoring cards.
The Manacle
Must play exactly 3 cards. Counter: Three of a Kind builds, High Card, or prepare for 3-card constraint.
The Wheel
50% chance first hand fails. Counter: Play a weak test hand first, then score with second hand.
