What are Decks?

Balatro offers 8 unique starting decks, each with different rules and modifications. Your deck choice affects your starting hand composition, shop offerings, and scoring mechanics. Some decks are unlocked by default, while others require completing challenges.

Each deck has specific advantages and disadvantages. Choosing the right deck for your strategy is crucial for success, especially on higher stakes.

All 8 Decks Ranked

Beginner-Friendly Decks

Best for new players. Balanced rules with no special penalties.

Red Deck Default

Standard deck - No special rules

52 cards, 4 suits, 13 ranks each

Strategy: Most flexible deck. Any Joker build works. Learn game basics here. No restrictions on suit or rank. Recommended for first wins.

Recommended Builds:

  • Pair build with Half Joker, Wee Joker
  • Flush build with Lusty/Wrathful Joker
  • Baron build with King conversion
Blue Deck Default

+1 hand per round

4 hands instead of 3

Strategy: Extra hand = more scoring chances. Great for beginners. More opportunities to find better hands. Less pressure per hand.

Recommended Builds:

  • Mystic Summit (+Mult per remaining hand)
  • Any build - flexibility helps
  • Good for learning hand types
Yellow Deck Default

+$2 per hand sold

Extra sell value

Strategy: Better economy. Sell extra hands for money. Works with economy Jokers. Early game boost when selling unused hands.

Recommended Builds:

  • Economy build with Greedy Joker
  • Shop-focused with Voucher chains
  • Joker cycling strategies

Intermediate Decks

Moderate challenge. Requires specific strategies.

Green Deck Win with Red, Blue, Yellow Deck

No discards, +1 hand per round

4 hands, 0 discards

Strategy: No discards! Must play what you draw. Requires planning. High risk but rewarding. Pair/Three of a Kind builds work well - don't need discards.

Recommended Builds:

  • High Card build with massive Joker support
  • Pair build (easy to form)
  • Three of a Kind with many copies
  • Avoid Straight/Flush builds (need discards)
Black Deck Win with Red, Blue, Yellow Deck

-1 hand size, +1 Joker slot

6 hand size, 6 Joker slots

Strategy: Smaller hand but more Jokers. 6 Jokers = more synergies. Works with Blueprint chains. Hand size reduction makes hands harder to form.

Recommended Builds:

  • Blueprint + Baron synergy chain
  • Joker scaling with 6 slots
  • Pair build (needs fewer cards)
  • Avoid Straight/Flush (need 5 cards)

Advanced Decks

High challenge. Requires expert strategy and Joker knowledge.

Magic Deck Win with Green or Black Deck

Each card drawn has chance to be enhanced

Random enhancements

Strategy: Random card enhancements (Mult, Bonus, Steel, etc.). Unpredictable but powerful. Works with Vampire for ×Mult scaling when enhanced cards destroyed.

Recommended Builds:

  • Vampire build (×Mult from destroyed enhancements)
  • Steel Joker (×Mult per Steel card)
  • Stone Joker (if Stone cards appear)
  • Flexible - depends on enhancements drawn
Plasma Deck Win with Magic Deck

All cards are Glass Cards

Glass Cards: ×2 Mult, 1 in 4 chance to break

Strategy: Every card gives ×2 Mult but can break. High risk! Once broken, card gone forever. Need Joker synergy to compensate for card loss. Amazing scoring but deck shrinks.

Recommended Builds:

  • Massive Mult builds (×2 per card ×5 = ×10)
  • Jokers that don't need many cards
  • Pair build (uses fewer cards)
  • Avoid hands that use many cards
Ghost Deck Win with Plasma Deck

Spectral Cards appear in shop, -1 hand size

6 hand size, Spectral Packs available

Strategy: Spectral Cards in shop! Soul, Ectoplasm, Ankh available. Hand size reduced. Use Spectrals strategically. Ankh ×2 Mult or Ectoplasm for extra Joker slot.

Recommended Builds:

  • Spectral synergy (buy Soul for rare Jokers)
  • Ectoplasm for 7 Joker slots
  • Ankh on powerful single Joker
  • Pair build (smaller hand size)

Deck Selection Strategy

Red Deck for Learning

Use Red Deck to learn game mechanics. No special rules means you can try any build. Master Joker synergies here before challenging decks.

Blue Deck for Extra Scoring

Blue Deck's +1 hand reduces pressure. Great for boss blinds. More chances to find good hands. Works with Mystic Summit for +Mult scaling.

Black Deck for Joker Chains

6 Joker slots enable Blueprint + Brainstorm + Baron + Mime + Joker + extras. Complex chains possible. Most advanced Joker synergy potential.

Green Deck Requires Planning

No discards means you MUST play what you draw. Pair/Three of a Kind are easiest. Avoid Straight/Flush which need specific cards. High Card builds work too.

Plasma Deck High Risk

All Glass Cards: ×2 Mult per card but 25% break chance. Deck shrinks as cards break. Best for Pair builds that use fewer cards. Massive Mult scaling.

Ghost Deck Spectral Power

Spectral Cards in shop = Soul (free rare Joker), Ectoplasm (+1 Joker slot), Ankh (×2 Mult on one Joker). Hand size reduced to 6. Use Spectrals wisely.
